What causes period pains?

I've been talking to a lot of you and some of you have been asking me what it is that causes period pains. Let's look into that together…

The medical term for period pains is dysmenorrhea. The term period pain basically refers to pain that is associated with menstruation. These painful periods are caused by contractions in the uterus.

Symptoms of dysmenorrhea

  • Lower back pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Cramps in the lower abdomen
  • Diarrhea
  • Headaches, etc..

There are two types of dysmenorrhea;

1.  Primary dysmenorrhea refers to the pains that women get before and during their periods. This pain occurs because prostaglandin makes the uterus muscles tighten and relax.  Primary dysmenorrhea can be associated with symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and fatigue. This pain is not caused by any medical condition. This pain usually occurs before or during your periods and it is recurring however, for some women the pain gets better after they give birth or as they get older.

2. Secondary dysmenorrhea refers to pain that is caused by some medical condition that affects the uterus. Some women start to experience this pain after years of primary dysmenorrhea or no period pains at all. Contrary to primary dysmenorrhea in this case the menstrual often gets worse over time. This pain also lasts longer than primary dysmenorrhea.

This type of menstrual pain is caused by conditions such as:
▪ Endometriosis
▪ Uterine fibroids
▪ Pelvic inflammatory disease
▪ Adenomyosis
▪ Cervical stenosis
