What factors of PCOS make it difficult to conceive?
1. Irregular periods or no periods at all
This is one of the most common signs of PCOS, this also includes having longer periods. If you are not having your periods that means that you are not ovulating, which makes it difficult to get pregnant. Women with PCOS produce greater quantities of male hormones (Androgens) than normal, which as a result causes hormonal imbalance.
The imbalance of hormones in women often leads to their body skipping menstruation which also makes it more difficult for them to become pregnant. The development and release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation) is hampered by the imbalance of hormones in women with PCOS. Many women with PCOS are unable to ovulate regularly. As a woman if you are unable to ovulate, this means that your body will not be able to make an egg available to be fertilized by sperm.
2. Weight gain
When you are unable to ovulate you are likely to be overweight. Additionally, When you have PCOS it is more difficult for the body to utilize the hormone known as insulin, which ordinarily aids in converting the sugars and carbohydrates in food into energy. As a result, insulin and glucose might accumulate in the bloodstream as a result of a disease, known as insulin resistance. Male hormones known as androgens are produced in greater quantities when insulin levels are high. One of the signs of high androgen levels is weight gain. Excess weight also decreases levels of sex hormone binding globulin which increases the likelihood of irregular periods and ovulation, which then means the chances of being able to conceive are lower.
